The first series of Bad Girls aired in 1999, and initially met with mixed ratings.

After suffering a dip mid-way through the series, many of the cast and crew feared the show would be axed, however, ratings picked up towards the end and a second series was commissioned – to much success.

The series is unique in that it features the nightcalls – at the end of each episode, there would be a shot of the prison exterior with the inmates calling out to each other – usually a humurous or relevant response to the episode’s events. The nightcalls were replaced in Series 2 with cliffhangers. The exception to the nightcall in the series came in Episode 4, where Crystal sang “Amazing Grace”.

Along with Series 2, Series 1 does not feature opening titles.

Series 1 was broadcast on Tuesdays at 9pm.
